Procedure for degree programmes with restricted admission

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available on the degree programme, a selection procedure is held.

90 per cent of the study places in the respective degree programme are allocated via selection procedures according to grade. A procedural grade is calculated as the average of the following three components:

  1. the average grade of the university entrance qualification (e.g., "Abitur")
  2. the average grade of the subjects maths, German and a continued foreign language
  3. Previous experience that provides information about subject-specific aptitude.

The average is calculated from the marks for criteria 1 and 2. It is calculated to one decimal place and is not rounded.

The following grade bonuses are awarded for previous experience that provides information on subject-specific aptitude:
a. For a journeyman's certificate or comparable qualification, 3 tenths
b. For a master craftsman, technician or equivalent or higher qualification, 2 tenths
c. For a service or pre-study internship, 1 tenth

The grade bonuses from a. to c. are cumulated up to a maximum bonus of 5 tenths. The calculated average grade is reduced by the calculated grade bonus and thus improved.

Ten per cent of available study places are reserved for applicants based on the waiting period. The waiting period is determined by the number of half-years that have elapsed since the applicant obtained their higher education entrance qualification without being enrolled at a German university.

Application for authorisation

A maximum of three applications for admission can be submitted per applicant.

Self-test for study orientation

In order to apply for a place at a university in Baden-Württemberg, a certificate of participation in a so-called orientation test is required. The state-wide self-test for study orientation covers all subjects and universities in Baden-Württemberg. This orientation test scientifically assesses your study- and career-related interests and abilities, providing you with detailed feedback. Based on the results, the OT indicates which degree programmes and careers may suit you best. You will also receive a certificate of participation, which confirms that you completed the OT but does not display your individual results.
