Studying at the University of Applied Forest Sciences – Rottenburg
Providing a choice between five main subjects, the degree course in Forest Sciences at Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences offers an individual study profile attuned to future needs.
The course for the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree has a strong practical bias and is based on the fundamental principles of sustainable forestry with a corresponding approach to ecological and economic issues.
The Curriculum
• Basic Science
Botany, Geology, Applied Climatology, Landscape Ecology, Zoology, Wildlife Ecology, Entomology, Soil Science, Statistics, Limnology etc.
• Basic Forest Engineering
Vegetation Science, Forest Technology, Dendrology, Forest Operations, Surveying, Mensuration etc.
• Subjects with practical relevance
Silviculture, Soil Ecology, Landscape Planning, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Timber Use, Data Processing, Forest Conservation, Forest Management and Business Studies, Law etc.
Special Subject Options
During the main part of the course, students may choose between the following special subject options:
• Forestry and Local government
• Business Administration and Timber Industry
• Geographic Information Systems and Landscape Management
• Tropical Forestry, (in cooperation with Larenstein University for Professional Education, NL)
• International Timber Trade, (dto.).
Structure of the course
The standard duration of the course is seven semesters. The 5th semester consists of an integrated practical training period which can be spent in approved forest enterprises or related enterprises and offices both in Germany and abroad.
Foundation course: 1st and 2nd semester
Intermediate Bachelor examination
Main part of the course: 3rd and 4th semester
Choice of special subject option
5th semester: practical training
Advanced studies: 6th and 7th semester
Final Examination
Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)**
** dual degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Rottenburg and Larenstein for those doing advanced studies in “Tropical Forestry” and “International Timber Trade”.
The Bachelor Course is accredited.

For many years we have fostered partnerships with universities in Brazil, Finland, France, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Spain and the Czech Republic through EU programmes (SOKRATES and ERASMUS).
Cooperations
We cooperate particularly closely with the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tuebingen (joint degree course in Geographic Ecology Systems Management), with Larenstein University for Professional Education / the Netherlands (joint advanced studies), with Universidade Federal de Santa Maria / Brazil and with the Technical College North Karelia Joensuu / Finland (research projects etc.).
SENCE – A unique interdisciplinary and international Master Course
This postgraduate course with special emphasis on research and project-oriented work in the field of renewable energy is offered in association with the Universities of Ulm (Center of expertise in solar thermal systems) and Stuttgart (Center of expertise in solar energy). The University of Rottenburg (Center of expertise in biomass) is the administration center of this cooperative master course and bunches all the activities which are linked with SENCE.
Sustainable ENergy CompetenCE is designed to develop competence in planning and in applying concepts for sustainable energy management and technology. The SENCE course is a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
It is a four semester course. The first semester consists of lectures and seminars which all take place at Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences.
The second semester is spent exclusively on two scientific founded projects. The third semester concentrates on the techniques and requirements of scientific study, and the fourth semester is devoted to writing the Master thesis required for the Masters degree.

Title: Master of Science (M.Sc.)
The Master Course is accredited.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a general or specialized Secondary School Leaving Certificate or Diploma (e.g. “A” Levels) entitling them to study at a University or University of Applied Sciences. Prior to enrolling, the applicant must have completed a minimum of eight weeks of practical training. In exceptional cases, it may be possible to complete practical training before the beginning of the second semester. Practical Training should normally take place in a forestry enterprise. Comparable work experience may be recognised. Details can be obtained on request.
For SENCE: Excellent performance as an academic graduate in a technical or natural science subject.
Admissions take place once yearly for the winter semester.

Sustainable Energy Competence SENCE: For EU citizens 1st of June. For non-EU citizens 15th of April.
